The history and development of the English Premiership

The Premiership, also known as the Premier League, or EPL, is the most popular football league in the world. The viewing figures for the games that are broadcast live across the world are higher than for any other league and it is the place where most of the world’s top players and managers want to come to.

The Premiership came about as the result of a period in the late1980s when English football was at a low ebb. A combination of hooliganism, outdated stadiums, falling attendances and the ban on English clubs playing in Europe meant that the game was struggling, meaning few major players wanted to play in England. The momentum for a new league was further increased following the Hillsborough disaster and the costs involved in rebuilding the football stadiums, which became a requirement as a result. The agreement to break away from the Football League and set up the Premiership was signed on 17th July 1991 and the clubs involved officially resigned form the League in February 1992. The terms of the Founder Members Agreement determined that the Premiership would be completely independent of both the Football League and the FA, giving the member clubs complete freedom when it came to negotiating broadcasting and sponsorship deals.

The broadcasting rights were sold to Sky TV, ensuring a level of live football on television far beyond what had previously been on offer. The money earned from this deal allowed the clubs to pay better wages, thus enabling them to attract the best players from around the world. It also helped them to build new stadiums or redevelop the existing ones. The increased standard of football has seen viewing figures rocket and the sums paid for the rights to screen matches also soar upward, during the twenty years since the formation of the Premier League. Together with lucrative sponsorship deals, the EPL is now the richest, most glamorous league in Europe.
